Projects

Mars Rover
This was a sticker design for a local drill bit manufacturer who created a special bit for the rock abrasion tool on one of the Mars land rovers.

Biker Bob
It started off as a caricature of a Harley-Davidson dealership to be used as part of the new logo for Biker Bob's Harley-Davidson.  It evolved into a series of Biker Bob poses used to identify different departments in the showroom and comic strips to adorn the showroom walls.  Graphic designers took a T-shirt design and turned it into artwork and graphics to shrinkwrap vehicles in.  Another company created a statue and mascot costume based on the character design.  To see all of this at the re-grand opening of the showroom was an amazing feeling.  My thanks to the marketing director for the amazing opportunity.

Credit Art
This series of spot illustrations was for an educational kit for college students, educating them on credit; how it works, pitfalls to avoid, how to check it, etc.  In this case the the graphic designer wanted a slightly edgier look and gave me reference material of the style she was looking for.  Unfortunately it did not make it to print.

IMSI Christmas Card
The original concept from the client was to have a seal skating the IMSI logo into the pond ice.  I provided the first sketch, which I thought didn't really work because the IMSI logo looked too intricate to be "drawn" with ice skates.  In the second sketch the logo looked lost on the seal's nose.  When I blew up the logo as a backdrop suddenly it looked like a like a hill in the background.  I added a few branches to the vertical bars for a to simulate trees and submitted the third sketch.  Wiith a seal having skates instead of flippers, I thought people would wonder what kind of animal it was, so I suggested a bear instead.  The last step was to create the final cover art and two other images for the inside and back.  The client was happy, and a holiday card was born!

Call for Entries
This was a pro bono job for the Ann Arbor Ad Club where they wanted some characters "calling" for entries for their annual ADDY awards show using various methods: smoke signals, horns, drums, etc.  This was really the first time I made extensive use of Adobe Streamline to convert my scanned original art into Illustrator, which is something I've become much more efficient at.  I still prefer using ink and a brush over the Wacom tablet when I can.

The follow up project was spot illustrations for inviting people to the ADDY awards show itself.

The Golf Classic
The drawings were made for award certificates for a family golf scramble held in honor of a significant birthday of a family member.  There were a few serious awards like the longest drive or longest putt, but most were just for fun, rudest player, best sand raker, cutest outfit, and such.  The drawings came out better than my golf game.

Pet Nuts
I came in mid-stream on this project.  Another illustrator had developed some of the characters for a proposed Flash animation series which was promoting a pet related product.  Thus I tried to create new character designs around an existing style.  The concept was an island inhabited by nut people with superhero squirrels and mutant helf-breeds, bear-hare for instance.  But for some reason pets characters were not a main focus.  For me it was another chance to explore the tools of Illustrator.

Polarpalooza
These unusual polar bears were developed as part of an informational flyer for Polarpalooza, an event for the city of Royal Oak where artists turn a basic polar bear form into a unique sculpture.  These designs were intended to start the creative juices flowing.  I tried to make it look like a technical drawing.  I also created the bear used in the logo.
